The sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kouklia is one of my favourite places to visit on holiday. It’s such a tranquil place.

If you’re interested in learning more about Greek mythology and the goddess of love herself you have to stop off at this World Heritage site.

According to Professor Lacovou, the site predates even the earliest notions the ancient Greeks had of Aphrodite as a beautiful woman. We see this anthropomorphic goddess typified in many later renaissance depictions too, such as Botticelli’s The birth of Venus.
