It’s wonderful to see such a beautiful piece of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show find a permanent home right here in my home city of Sheffield.

The award-winning “On the Edge” garden, designed by Sarah Eberle MBE for the Campaign to Protect Rural England, won Gold and Garden of the Year at Chelsea 2026. Now, its incredible centrepiece, a huge wooden sculpture of Gaia, the Greek Earth goddess, contrasts beautifully against the brutalist architecture of Sheffield’s iconic Park Hill flats.

Standing in front of the colourful Grade II listed flats, Gaia really does feel as though she belongs here. She was carved from sequoia trees by sculptor Chris Wood, and seeing her reassembled in the heart of our community is something special.

The surrounding area has also been transformed, with new paths and landscaped green space creating somewhere people can stop, sit and enjoy. More planting will be added later this year, making the garden even more inviting.

As a local, I’m delighted to see this space being given a new lease of life. Park Hill has such a distinctive character, and Gaia seems to add something really positive: a sense of calm, beauty and community.

I hope the garden becomes somewhere people come to spend time, meet others and simply enjoy being outdoors. It feels like Gaia is already becoming the heart of Park Hill, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the space grows.
