I’ve been dabbling with Lightroom recently to explore which settings work well when taking photographs of birds, and I want to share what I’ve learned along the way. Taking photographs of birds can be very rewarding and very frustrating, in equal measure.

Photo of the day (Goldcrest)

Patience.
It doesn’t always pay off, but sometimes it does, and today was one of those days. I’d waited patiently outside Bluebell Wood for about fifteen minutes, just listening to the birds with my camera. I could hear common chiffchaffs, song thrushes and even the occasional bullfinch, but none of them were in view to take a good photograph.
Then, as if by magic, a goldcrest landed on a branch a few feet away. It was almost as if it were chirping: “I know you’ve been waiting patiently for a good shot, so here’s your chance!”
Love this shot for the framing and the way the bird is looking at me. Did it really pop down just to reward my patience?

Photo of the day (Hooded Crow – Corvus corone)

A relatively common bird in Cyprus. This one came so close I could capture it with the smart phone.
They eat almost everything and often steal food from smaller birds and, occasionally, pork gyros from unsuspecting tourists. As long as there’s not too much garlic mayo …
Beautiful bird.
Photo of the day (Robin)

One of my favourite birds 🙂
Fun fact about Robins – they’re very territorial and loyal to their food sources. The Robin you see in your garden is probably the same one each time.

It’s been one of those weeks for bird photography. When I say “those weeks” I mean that sometimes you can head out with your camera and not capture anything. But occasionally, you get a week when you’re incredibly lucky.
That was this week 🙂

Photo of the day (Nuthatch)
Taking photographs of wild birds can be incredibly frustrating. No sooner have you raised your camera and the moment is lost.
Not so today, though. This little Nuthatch was joyfully pecking away at the dead branch in shot and was more than happy to be photographed.

If only every day out with the camera was like this one!
